Early College High School

The mission of the ECHS program, in conjunction with higher education and community partners, is to successfully prepare students to complete an associate’s degree, or, two years toward a four year degree, while they are still in high school. Because of this mission, planning in collaboration with college partners is crucial to ECHS. Backward mapping of the curriculum and early exposure to campus life and course work are two innovative features that separate ECHS from an ordinary high school experience. Collaboration with the Newark ECHS includes the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, in an advisory capacity, as well as Essex County College and Rutgers University as higher education partners. The key academic component is an aggressively rigorous course sequence for students beginning in grade 6, combined with an affective support system that will enable the goal of reaching beyond a high school diploma toward a college degree.

  1. I did not know that this was an active program for our student, It would be great to prepare our children for the ultimate college experience. I would like to use this as another way of helping my 7th grader to better prepare for not only college but high school as well, I would like to receive more information on how my son can become involved.

This is a wonderful initiative... I hope you all are discussing deceloping a four year plan for financing a college degree. The students get here but are often unprepared for the financial responsibility eve with Financial Aid.. especially if they plan to live on campus. More needs to be done in this area including research about scholarships... let me know if I can assist... 973.748.9000 ext. 784

  3. This is the perfect opportunity for our 5th graders to begin a progressive and positive avenue to high school and preparation for college, our children in the Newark NJ area deserve these opportunities to further their education and skills for their future, this will not only be great for the children but also for parents, especially those who are challenged financially. Good education and guidance are two very important areas that children need to move ahead in life.
